things for couples to do at home

You’ve finished dinner. Neither of you has plans. There are a couple of hours before bed. And almost automatically, someone reaches for the remote.

There’s nothing wrong with watching TV together. Some nights, collapsing on the sofa and watching three episodes of something is exactly what you need. But when every free evening starts looking like that, perhaps it’s time to change the script.

The good news? You don’t need reservations, tickets or an elaborate date night. You don’t even need to leave the house.

Here are 18 things couples can do at home when you want tonight to feel a little different.

1. Cook something neither of you has made before

Not your reliable pasta. Not the dal you can make without thinking. Find a recipe neither of you has attempted and make it together. The possibility of complete culinary disaster is part of the fun.

2. Have a blindfolded taste test

Raid the kitchen for interesting foods, sauces, fruits, chocolates and snacks. Blindfold your partner, feed them one at a time and make them guess what they’re eating. Then switch.

3. Learn one dance

You don’t need dance lessons. Find a beginner tutorial online, clear some space and give yourselves thirty minutes to learn the routine. Perform it once at the end, however badly.

4. Have a living-room picnic

Put a blanket on the floor. Bring out snacks, drinks and cushions. Put your phones somewhere else. Congratulations. Your living room is now a destination.

5. Create a cocktail

Don’t just follow a recipe. Use whatever you have and invent your own drink. Taste, adjust, argue about whether it needs more lime, and eventually give your creation a ridiculous name. Alcohol optional. Ridiculous name mandatory.

6. Read to each other

Pick a short story, essay, poem or chapter from a book you love. One person reads. The other listens. There’s something unexpectedly intimate about hearing words through the voice of someone you love.

7. Play cards

Remember those? Find a deck and teach each other a game. Add a completely meaningless prize for the winner and watch how quickly things become competitive.

8. Have a karaoke night

YouTube. Two imaginary microphones. No neighbours you particularly care about impressing. Take turns choosing songs for each other. Duets strongly encouraged.

9. Turn the lights out

Switch off every electric light for an hour. Use candles, torches or whatever ambient light comes through the windows. It’s remarkable how different a familiar home feels when you change one simple thing.

10. Have a photoshoot

Take turns being photographer and subject. Pick an interesting corner of the house, experiment with clothes and lighting, and try to take a photograph of your partner that they genuinely love.

11. Invent new nicknames

You probably already have names for each other. Tonight, invent new ones. Each person gets three attempts. Your partner chooses the winner. You’re required to use it for the rest of the evening. Choose carefully.

12. Build the soundtrack of your relationship

Pick ten songs together. The song from when you met. One from a memorable trip. The embarrassing song you both secretly love. Something that reminds you of a difficult time. Something that sounds like right now. Save the playlist.

13. Have a no-phone hour

Put both phones somewhere you can’t casually reach them. Not face down on the table. Not beside you on the sofa. Another room. Then figure out what to do with each other. That last part is the activity.

14. Play a childhood game

Think of something you loved as a child. Cards. Carrom. Ludo. Charades. Building something. Drawing. Introduce your partner to it. Bonus points if you become irrationally competitive.

15. Write each other a note

Not an anniversary card. Not a birthday message. Just a note. Write something you appreciate about your partner that you probably don’t say often enough. Exchange them. Keep them.

16. Have dessert for dinner

You’re adults.Nobody can stop you. Make pancakes, order cake, open the ice cream or attempt something elaborate. For one evening, dessert is dinner.

17. Watch your old photos together

Don’t just scroll through last month’s camera roll. Go back. Years back. Find the terrible hairstyles. The first holidays. The restaurants that no longer exist. The photographs you’ve forgotten taking. Every relationship quietly accumulates an archive. Visit yours.

18. Create something together

Paint a canvas. Build something. Make clay figures. Plant something. Decorate a corner of your home. The result doesn’t need to be good. It just needs to exist because the two of you made it.

You don’t need to turn every Tuesday night into an adventure. And you certainly don’t need another relationship checklist telling you that happy couples bake sourdough together every Wednesday.

Some nights should be boring. Some nights should be Netflix. Some nights you won’t have the energy for anything else. The problem is when you stop choosing. When every evening follows the same pattern simply because neither of you can think of an alternative.

Breaking that pattern doesn’t require a weekend away. Sometimes it takes a deck of cards. Or some paint. Or turning the lights off. Or putting two phones in another room. Or asking: “Want to do something different tonight?” And having an answer.

Spurkle gives couples three to five ideas every day for things to do together – Casual or Intimate, Now or Later. Don’t scroll through hundreds of ideas. Pick from today’s few and do something together.
